Is Indian Point a "Chernobyl
on the Hudson" in waiting?
The Indian Point Nuclear Power Plant is one of the region's top
threats to public health and safety
Currently, Indian Point sits along the Hudson River 24 miles north
of New York City with limited security measures:
- There is no robust structure over the spent fuel pools to suppress
a radiation release or repel an attack.
- There is no 24-hour combat air and water patrol around Indian
Point
- There is not a No-Fly Zone around Indian Point
- There are no protective barriers to prevent a water-based attack.
News:
New study on the health and economic consequences of a terrorist attack
on Indian Point.
On September 8th, as part of the next phase of our campaign, Riverkeeper
released a new report that examines the terrorist threat to Indian
Point and
the health and economic consequences of a large release of radiation.
The
report, titled "Chernobyl on the Hudson? - The Health
and Economic Impacts of a Terrorist Attack at Indian Point Power Plant,"
was authored by Dr. Edwin Lyman, a senior staff scientist in the Global Security Program
for the Union of Concerned Scientists.
The report predicts up to 518,000 long-term deaths and up to 44,000
prompt deaths from a radioactive release triggered by a terrorist attack
or accident at Indian Point under weather conditions that maximize
the rain-related fallout of radioactivity over New York City.

Riverkeeper Indian Point radio ads air during playoffs
Just as the Bronx Bombers began their first of a seven game series
in their bid for the American League Pennant, devoted fans learned
just how little has been done to secure the Indian Point nuclear
power plant, located a mere 30 miles upwind from the House that
Ruth built. The radio ads were broadcast on WCBS AM 880. In conjunction
with this new round of advertising, Riverkeeper and its members
also claimed Yankee Stadium as its home base to educate fans about
the risks posed by Indian Point.
Funding for the ads came from concerned residents and Yankees enthusiasts
who were disgusted by Entergy's deceptive radio spots that have
run throughout the summer during Yankees' games.
